Registered Charity No: 293340 (England & Wales).
Bipolar UK is the national charity dedicated to supporting individuals and families with the much misunderstood and complex illness of bipolar.
Although a small national charity, our services have enormous reach and we work with more than 65,000 individuals and families every year.
Between 600,000 and 1.2 million individuals in the UK (1% to 2% of the population) experience a lifetime prevalence of bipolar and recent research suggest as many as 5% of us are on the bipolar spectrum. However the impact and devastation of bipolar is not just about the sufferers alone. Extending the impact to parents and partners, for example, bipolar impacts over three million people in the UK today.
Bipolar takes an average of 10.5 years to diagnose in the UK and unfortunately the illness increases the risk of suicide by up to 20 times.
The World Health Organisation identifies bipolar as one of the top causes of lost years of life and health in 15 to 44 year olds.
We believe the key to coping with bipolar is an early diagnosis, acceptance of the illness and adapting your lifestyle. Management of the illness can be achieved through strategies involving medication, health care, therapy and self-management.
We work to ensure all individuals with bipolar can manage their illness and lead independent lives. With the amazing support of our staff team, volunteers, service users, supporters and partnering organisations we all work to support individuals affected by bipolar.
