Detention Action is a human rights charity committed to defending the rights and improving the welfare of people held by the government in immigration detention.
Every year, the UK detains over 20,000 people, often in inhumane conditions, with no limit on how long they can be held. These individuals are among some of society’s most vulnerable people, many of them survivors of torture, human trafficking, and persecution.
Founded in 1993, Detention Action is now the UK’s largest holistic support service for people in detention. Through our one-to-one visits and casework service, we provide vital practical and emotional support. Our aim is to ensure that people feel listened to, connected to wider support, and empowered to stand up for their rights.

As one of the few groups able to monitor conditions in detention, we are a cornerstone of the movement to uplift the voices of people who are detained. We have played a central role in some of the most significant immigration policy reforms in recent years, such as leading the first legal challenge against the UK-Rwanda removals scheme.
