The Foundation funds clinical research at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in conjunction with the National Heart and Lung Institute of Imperial College and with Kings College, London. These are postgraduate hospitals and universities specialising at national and international levels in the treatment of common and rare disorders of the heart and lung. Clinical research is carried out by committed teams of clinicians and scientists who deliver bench-to-bedside research by investigating diseases using cutting-edge science, and by delivering advances in science to patients.
The national burden of heart and lung disease is immense, causing unquantifiable misery. Almost everyone has a family member, friend or colleague who has died or suffered from heart and lung disease.
Our objective is to develop and apply the best treatments to cure or ameliorate the numerous diseases of heart and lungs and improve the quality of life for those suffering from heart and lung disorders.
We aim to prevent, cure and treat disease through investigating patients and applying modern science to
- Understand the root causes of disease
- Early detection and screening
- Identify individuals particularly at risk
- Develop tests for the identification and staging of disorders in patients
- Treat and manage both common and rare disorders
- Examine the benefits and risks of new therapies
- Determine, deliver and ever improve the evidence base of clinical management of patients
How quickly these objectives are met depends on the generosity of the public. We need your help and support to enable the work to flourish, to protect good health, save lives and bring relief to those who suffer from heart and lung diseases. Legacies and donations are gratefully received, and all put to immediate use in financing research. Our expenses are paid by the income from our founding endowment, so every pound contributed goes straight to fund active clinical research.
