Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain usually caused by infection invading the brain or by the autoimmune system attacking the brain in error. Encephalitis is indiscriminate showing no respect for age, sex, culture or nationality. Encephalitis has a high mortality rate. Many survivors are left with an acquired brain injury, the degree and severity of which will vary, and struggle for the rest of their lives with the consequences of this devastating condition. Each year, as many as 6,000 new cases are diagnosed in England alone. Despite new advances in medicine there is a lack of research and information about this condition. Support for dealing with the effects of a brain injury is sometimes very poor. A lack of awareness among the general public and professionals makes it even more difficult for people to fully recover.

The Encephalitis Society provides support and information for all people affected by encephalitis and those professionals involved in their care; raises awareness about the condition and conducts and promotes research into encephalitis and its consequences.

We are the only resource of our kind in the world and have been described by those who use our services as "a light in a very dark place". The Encephalitis Society receives no statutory funding and relies heavily on voluntary contributions. We could not do our work without the help of our supporters.

By leaving a Gift to The Encephalitis Society you can help secure the provision of information, and support to everybody affected by Encephalitis!
