I wholeheartedly agree with Alison Hook's assessment that the Law Society should consider following the American Bar Association (ABA) model when thinking about a formal divide between its representative and regulatory roles (see [2004] Gazette, 19 August, 15).


The Society should also take note that the ABA commits itself to annual funding of its Young Lawyers Division (YLD) to the tune of around £10 per young lawyer member (in addition to the sizeable amounts it gives to the YLD to undertake a series of public service projects). All this is achieved from the annual ABA fees, without additional payment for YLD membership.
