I am the solicitor quoted in Peter Williamson's piece 'Doing the right thing' (see [2008] Gazette, 12 June, 15). I welcome the openness of his response, as chairman of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), to the spate of criticisms of the ways in which the SRA sometimes conducts its investigation and enforcement procedures.
His intentions and those of SRA chief executive Antony Townsend are laudable. I am sure those of us who are critical will engage constructively to help the new leadership of the SRA establish the confidence in its procedures which is currently absent.
Without that, there is no chance of Mr Williamson's wish for successful SRA regulation 'in partnership with the profession' being met.
