Chariot of fire

Chariot of fire: Eversheds partners retreated to the Tower Thistle Hotel by London Bridge last weekend and found themselves surrounded by marathon runners.

One partner was overheard having a chat with a tracksuited woman and parted by generously wishing her well and expressing the hope that she would complete the course.

I hope so, the woman is said to have replied, I won it last year.

Sadly for Tegla Loroupe (above), an injury early in the race meant she was unable to repeat the feat.

Similarly, unable to repeat past glories was 1989 winner Veronique Marot, now a solicitor in Leeds, who nonetheless finished impressively inside three hours 12 minutes 46 minutes outside of the British record she held for 12 years after less than four months of training.
