Democracy issue

As the person who co-ordinated the Milton Keynes Law Society survey of the profession referred to in your article of last week (see [2000] Gazette, 19 October, 1) I was concerned that council member Peter Williamson dismissed it as 'completely inappropriate', as the results did not reflect council policy.

I would have thought that it was for the council to reflect the profession's wishes.

If Mr Williamson is right the council quite clearly has not learned from the indemnity insurance issue where its decision in the morning to retain the Solicitors Indemnity Fund was rejected by the SGM in the afternoon.

I recall that Mr Williamson was the chairman of the SIF at the time.

We have started collecting signatures to requisition one, but do we really have to call another SGM to get the message of the need for professional democracy over?
