Down memory lane:

There are many law firms that can proudly trace their history back over centuries.

Newcastle-under-Lyme firm Knight & Sons charges a member of staff with the responsibility of maintaining its historic scrapbook, which contains press cuttings, letters and memorabilia dating back to the 1850s - although the firm has been in existence since 1767.

Alan Brooke, who was done the job since 1959, is retiring and here hands over charge of the scrapbooks to Glenys Stone, who has worked at the firm for a mere 26 years.

The cuttings tell of First World War battles, and in particular partner John Hall Knight, an officer commanding the 5th battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment, who was killed while leading his men in the charge on the Hohenzollern Redoubt during the battle of Loos in 1915.

A flick through the scrapbook reveals some of the more mundane events on record, however, such as a receptionist bitten by a squirrel.
