Flexible friends
The social and employment issues committee of The National Council of Women of Great Britain (NCW) was pleased to note in a recent issue that you reported on the problems faced by those wishing to work flexitime (see [2001] Gazette, 28 June, 6).
We are also aware that you have, on occasion, highlighted the effect on women of the long-hours culture. The NCW has for more than 100 years worked to promote women in the professions and so we are somewhat disappointed that so many women take the view that, in the City, if they work flexitime it could be detrimental to their careers.
We would encourage all women who wish to pursue their careers and enjoy a family life to promote the ethos of flexible work patterns.
Margaret Field, vice-president (policy), The National Council of Women of Great Britain
