Just deserts
I was disturbed by the cynical waffle pumped out by Mark Stephens (see [2001] Gazette, 16,9 August). He can surely realise the difference between saying that a piece of meat like an old boot was really a delicious meal darling, and, on oath, whether I did or did not do something at a particular place on a particular day at a particular time.He seems to think that we should abolish the offence of perjury.
I did not meet one person who did not believe that Archer fully deserved four years (and more), thus demonstrating that the society in the UK today believes that telling naked lies, on oath, is a wicked thing and should be condignly punished.Patrick Hargan, solicitor, Hickmotts, Rotherham
