The Law Society says that government plans to make it easier for small businesses to dismiss employees will not help those businesses to grow. The Society’s Employment Law Committee chairman’s views to this effect were quoted in a Society press release.

Whether or not the government’s proposals for changes to employment law will, or will not, promote growth is a complex and highly political issue. Employers’ organisations generally share the government’s views. Trade unions say the opposite. It is disappointing that the Society has expressed an opinion on an economic and political issue. Over the years, I have served as a member of four Law Society standing committees; we always considered it unprofessional to involve ourselves in political point-scoring.

The Gazette recently reported that no fewer than 11 Law Society committees currently have vacancies. Perhaps a policy of refusing to engage in party politics will make it easier to fill those vacancies?
