The problem with publication of The Legal 500 directory is that newsdesks around the country are deluged with press releases from firms celebrating their achievements.

The first thing that usually goes out the window in these is a sense of perspective: witness York and Lincoln firm Langleys.

'Langleys climbs the Legal 500 ladder,' a press release blared, noting how the firm 'has again improved its ranking in the Legal 500's listing of the UK's largest law firms'.

So what gains had the firm's 'success and growth' brought it? A jump from 186th place on the list all the way up to, erm, 183rd.
