LAWYER IN THE NEWS ; ;Who? Mark Jones, 42-year-old senior partner of Mark Jones & Partners, a three-partner firm in Liverpool. ;Why is he in the news? Represented Michael Abrams, who last week was found not guilty by reason of insanity of trying to kill the ex-Beatle George Harrison. Abrams, a paranoid schizophrenic, believed that Mr Harrison was a witch who had possessed him, and so he had to kill him. After breaking into the musicians Oxfordshire mansion, Abrams attacked Mr Harrison, and was eventually beaten off by Olivia Harrison, Mr Harrisons wife, who repeatedly hit him with a table lamp. ;Background: Law degree at Liverpool Polytechnic 1976-79, followed by Law Society Finals at the College of Law in Chester. He qualified in April 1983 with Liverpool firm Davies Campbell (now Davies Wallis Foyster), before moving to Silverbeck Rymer in 1983. He left in 1996 to set up Mark Jones & Partners, which specialises in criminal work. ;Route to the case: Peter Edwards, a mental health specialist solicitor, referred the case to me. ;Thoughts on the case: Before he committed the attack, Michael had been seen by seven psychiatrists in the last eight years, none of whom had diagnosed the pretty obvious signs of paranoid schizophrenia. He had turned to drugs as a result but it was after he gave them up, in June 1999, that he became seriously deluded, and started to believe that George Harrison was a witch. He was extremely ill when I first saw him after the attack, and I think the fact that he had been released from hospital months before the attack, with no medication, is a disgrace. Care in the community may work for some people, but it certainly didnt work for Michael. Now hes on medication in hospital, and hes improved tremendously. ;Dealing with the media: I havent had much experience at dealing with the media, but Ive found that I like doing it. ;Victoria MacCallum ; ; ;
