I am writing to respond to the lady whose letter 'cheap labour' was published in last week's Gazette (see [2008] Gazette, 29 May, 11). I am sorry she is disillusioned by the legal profession, but amazed at her naivety. Has this evidently intelligent woman not realised that the legal profession was invented by men for men?
The reason she cannot 'observe any other female solicitors of a similar PQE' is because they have all got fed up of 'kicking against the pricks' and have left - either to have another go at a firm where they believe the attitude to women will be different (d'oh!) or because women have children (as opposed to men, who don't).
She could do what I did, which was to set up my own firm. Best thing I ever did - no pay discrepancy battles to fight and more work than I know what to do with.
