The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) should take a more active role in supporting disabled law students, the new chairman of the Group for Solicitors with Disabilities (GSD), David Merkel, told the Gazette this week.

‘There appears to be a "ping pong" game between the SRA [now responsible for training] and Legal Practice Course providers about who should take charge of the problem,’ he said.

He added that the GSD hoped to develop a campaign with the Law Society to raise awareness.

Antony Townsend, chief executive of the SRA, stressed that all training providers should comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
