Manchester-based James Chapman & Co took its partnership total to 33 this month with the appointment of four new partners - Sue Drinkwater and Quentin Underhill in personal injury, and Mike Blood and Jason Smith in the firm's sports and media department.London media and entertainment firm Harbottle & Lewis has made up two new partners: Lisa Bennett, who heads the employment group, and Bob Mitchell, head of the sports group.

Meanwhile, in Brighton, DMH has promoted four new partners:l Mark Culbert (commercial litigation);l Justin Ellis (commercial);l Lynne Passmore (family); andl Alistair Rustemeyer (marine).

In Essex, child care lawyer Colin Dearmer has become a partner at Twitchen Musters & Kelly.

In Sunderland, personal injury and criminal specialist Michael Robinson has been made a partner at Jacqueline Emmerson.

Commercial litigator and housing management specialist Sian Evans has moved within Liverpool to join JST Mackintosh from Bremner Sons & Corlett.

Mark Bratherton (personal injury) has also been promoted to partner.

Corporate expert Vanessa Williams has become a partner in the Oxford office of M4 firm Morgan Cole.

US firm Latham & Watkins has appointed three new partners in its London office: James Chesterman, former head of banking in the London office of US firm Weil Gotshal & Manges; tax specialist Oonagh Whitty, from Watson Farley & Williams; and Kevin Dunn, who was formerly European counsel at GE Capital Commercial Finance.

Michael Jones has joined the London office of Weil Gotshal & Manges from Jones & Warner.

He will head the European litigation and international arbitration group.London-based Bazley White & Co has recruited Judith Goodman to head its family department from Goodman Ray.

Property specialist Frewin Jenkins has joined Irwin Mitchell's London office from Manches & Co.

Hill Dickinson's City office has lost partner Kay Pysden to the City office of Davies Lavery, where she will head their transit team.

Meanwhile, international banking projects lawyer Andrew Watson has move to US firm McDermott Will & Emery from Allen & Overy.

In Birmingham, Lee Crowder has recruited Zafar Rafiq to head its corporate recovery and insolvency unit from Gateley Wareing in Leicester.

Pensions specialist Richard Davis has joined Browne Jacobson in Nottingham from Edge Ellison, which merged with Hammond Suddards earlier this month.

Sinclair Roche & Temperley has recruited corporate, banking and securities expert Douglas Smith to its Hong Kong office from Canadian firm Goodman Phillips & Vineberg.

Clifford Chance finance partner William Knowles is leaving London to develop the firm's finance department in Prague.

Velia Leone is moving from Berwin Leighton's Brussels office to head its Italian private finance initiative (PFI) task force.

Charles Lowe of Holman Fenwick & Willan is moving to Piraeus to take over from managing partner John Krzywkowski, who returns to London.

Associates/Assistants

Four new associates have been appointed at London entertainment firm Harbottle & Lewis:l Sebastian Belcher (interactive entertainment and new media);l Linda Courtney (private client);l Abigail Payne (film and television); andl James Sully (music).

Also in London, KPMG's associated law firm, KLegal, has recruited PFI lawyer Nick Zentner from Pinsent Curtis.

US firm Jones Day Reavis & Pogue has recruited corporate finance specialist Julian Gamble from Simmons & Simmons and intellectual property lawyer Alison Crofts from Clifford Chance.

In Surrey, two new solicitors have joined Mundays: Jennifer Ison (corporate/commercial) leaves German firm CMS Hasche Sigle Eschenlohr Peltzer, and Julie Sayers (franchising) leaves Ford & Warren in Leeds.

The head of pensions, Philip Ryley, and solicitor Nicola Lerry, at Bristol firm Ringrose Wharton - which is being absorbed by south-west firm Clarke Willmott & Clarke - have left to join the Cardiff office of Eversheds.

JUDICIARY

Paul Ayres, a partner with Cole & Co in Norwich, has been appointed a district judge on the South Eastern Circuit.Solicitor Iain Hamilton, who became a Recorder in 1996, has been assigned to the Northern Circuit.Harvey Silverman, a partner at west Sussex firm Marsh Ferriman & Cheale, has been appointed as a district judge on the South Eastern (London) circuit.

CORRECTIONS

Accountant Stan Blake has joined Liverpool-based Davies Wallis Foyster as head of tax in the corporate department but is not a partner (see [2000] Gazette, 13 July, 44).

Nicholson Graham & Jones is a broad City practice and not just a construction firm (see [2000] Gazette, 17 August, 10).
