NON-SOLICITOR POINTS As a non-solicitor who has worked in the legal profession for the past three and a half years years, I was pleased to read that multi-disciplinary partnerships might be allowed within the next 12 months (see [2000] Gazette, 5 January, 18).However, I believe that Herbert Smith's recommendations to the Law Society's MDP working party that solicitors and non-solicitors should not share offices, secretaries or filing systems are utter rubbish. As well as sharing an office with three solicitors, I work on the same files as solicitors and take my fair share of the bills delivered.
In no way is client confidentiality breached because I happen to be a non-solicitor.
If Herbert Smith's recommendations are accepted, then I cannot foresee any firm of solicitors agreeing to have non-solicitor partners.
