I read with interest the comment from Peter Lewis, head of CJS Efficiency Programme. I am beginning to lose count of similar claims and ‘recommendations’ for us to sign up to this new system.

I have been to a number of presentations by the Crown Prosecution Service and agencies. I have written numerous letters. I have still to receive a reply to one of the most important questions the defence community has raised in respect of this initiative, namely who is going to pay for the massive increased printing and copying costs, which will fall to the defence. We are being asked to sign up for something that is going to save the prosecution money at our expense.

Until this question is resolved, those involved should not be surprised by the reluctance of defence professionals to engage with the initiative.
