Michael Heneker is right in saying that any ceding of powers in the area of criminal justice to the EU involves a loss of sovereignty to Britain (see [2004] Gazette, 27 May, 14).
It is time that the Law Society came out with a clear statement of where it stands in this important matter. Does it intend to defend the freedoms and rights on which British law has rested for centuries, or is it prepared to let the government negotiate these rights away, as part of an attempt to reach agreement on the so-called 'red-line issues'?
