Saluting volunteers

In reply to Gerald Funnell's letter (see [2001] Gazette, 11 May, 16) I should say how pleased I am to see that pro bono is certainly thriving outside London. Our organisation is the only national charity existing to promote, encourage and support solicitors in their pro bono efforts and we are particularly keen to show the good work that is happening outside London.

To this end, a survey of all solicitors is an excellent idea, and one which the charity with, I hope, the assistance of the Law Society, would be keen to undertake.Liverpool Law Society has already agreed to this in its area and I hope the rest of the country will follow suit.As 2001 is the International Year of the Volunteer, it is a good opportunity publicly to recognise the volunteer work of solicitors.

I welcome views from all about the desirability and content of a possible survey. Therefore, we hope that in return for our pledge of support to solicitors in their pro bono work, they will support us by becoming members of the charity.Together the pro bono effort of all will grow stronger and help more people in need.Susan Bucknall, director, Solicitors Pro Bono Group, London
