Sully hits big-time TV as Popstars choose their lawyerThe young stars of the cultural phenomenon of the moment, television show 'Popstars', have chosen music lawyer James Sully of niche entertainment practice Harbottle & Lewis to advise them. The show follows the progress of five bright young wannabe popstars - picked from 3,000 hopefuls - on their route to fame, fans and the front pages.Mr Sully was picked by the ten finalists of the show from a beauty parade of 'five or six' specialist music lawyers assembled by Granada Television.
He was appointed to give the band advice independent from that of Granada and its record company, Polydor.Having negotiated the band's record deal, 'which obviously took up a huge amount of time', Mr Sully is now arranging merchandising tie-ins - such as the Popstars dolls - and magazine deals.
'Because at the moment everyone wants a piece of them, dealing with these clients is proving to be a very interesting experience,' he said.Victoria MacCallum
