Vicarious liability

The Court of Appeal upheld a ruling that supermarket chain Morrisons is liable for compensation claims arising from the actions of a former employee jailed for leaking payroll data. Morrisons plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Disclosure duty

A revised prosecution code of practice requires prosecutors to consider whether any material held by the police could affect their decision to charge a suspect. Outgoing director of public prosecutions Alison Saunders said a ‘rigorous examination’ is required of evidence that assists the defence.

Ashurst women

City firm Ashurst said it wants a partnership that is 33% female (currently 24%) by the end of 2021/22. It also wants 30% of ‘legal leadership’ roles and 50% of senior business services roles to be held by women.  

Powerlist lawyers 

Joshua Siaw, partner at international firm White & Case, and the World Bank Group’s general counsel Sandie Okoro, appear on the annual Powerlist, which celebrates 100 of Britain’s most influential people of African and African Caribbean heritage.

Insurance division

A new division of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers will support lawyers working in the London and Lloyd’s market. London FOIL will be led by Jennette Newman, partner at global firm Clyde & Co. 

Judicial barriers
