Having read the latest letter about poor grammar, I could not resist raising my pet hate (see [2008] Gazette, 11 September, 9).

When did ‘gift’ become a verb? Do non-lawyers talk about ‘gifting’ a house, as almost all private client practitioners now do?

No, they don’t, any more than they might offer to ‘gift’ their friend a lift to the shops.

The verb is ‘give’ so why not use it? We do ourselves no favours by talking in a way that clients do not.
