I refer to the article ‘Which? to ramp up legal services arm’ (see [2008] Gazette, 29 May, 1), which reported comments made at a debate about the Legal Services Act 2007, and the response published on this letters page (‘Which? way next?’, 5 June, 12).

Your article stated that Which? Legal Service plans to expand and reported my comment that it is ‘possible’ we may set up or take over a law firm. As a provider of legal advice, we will naturally be considering all available options arising from the reforms to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service for consumers.

Our provision of legal advice does not, as suggested in the published response, affect our independence or credibility. Which? is an entirely independent, not-for-profit organisation. All the income from our commercial activity is used to fund our research and our campaigning work on behalf of all consumers.

This means that we put consumers’ interests at the heart of everything we do.
