I read with interest the Comment column 'Giving the deceased the last word' (see [2004] Gazette, 8 July, 14) and in particular the reference to the establishment of a central register for wills. This company offers a facility through an on-line interface. But we are not the only company operating in this field and until such a scheme becomes mandatory, it will not be universal.

In the recent review of probate business, the Court Service listed a consultant's recommendation: 'The service should explore commercial interest in a database of safety custody wills.' Unfortunately, this was not a matter that was to feature in the final report published this April.
