A recent issue of the London Lawyer, the newsletter produced for the Young Solicitors Group in the capital, ran a coverline that blared: 'The case for cannabis'.

Moreover, the sub-heading was equally contentious, designed no doubt with the intention of driving the shadow home secretary into a paroxysm of apoplexy: 'Call it dope, call it pot, call it wacky-backy.

But whatever you call it, one thing remains - Britain loves it.' However, instead of being a flower power-style call to arms for young solicitors to get high, the piece was a tame and sensible review of the current legal position.

The newsletter also explored the possible impact of the Human Rights Act on existing dangerous drugs legislation.
