Rugby referee Wayne Barnes today blew the whistle on his career in the middle, which culminated in the World Cup final last Saturday between New Zealand and South Africa (pictured).

Barnes’ statement was touching, saying this was the right time to retire for himself and his family.

‘My children have missed out on time with their dad for far too long and I am now looking forward to family weekends, sports matches, school assemblies and birthday parties,’ said the 44-year-old.

Many might not know that Barnes is also a successful partner with global firm Squire Patton Boggs, based in its London office in the government investigations and white collar practice. His entry on the firm’s website states that Barnes balances his legal career with professional rugby commitments and uses his sporting insight in his work, acting for national governing bodies and professional sports organisations. Obiter wishes him continued success during the working week and some well-deserved weekends off.
