Alexander Morgan’s association with motor racing began in karts at the age of nine. He quickly showed an exceptional talent, which saw him elevated as a teenager to international competitions where he faced the likes of future Formula One stars Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo (he beat Ricciardo but could never quite best Bottas).
But Morgan was a little different from his teenage peers. While he had no lack of passion for motor sport, he also knew he wanted to pursue a career in the law. Now he has the best of both worlds, having made it to partnership at national firm Knights. He has given up the international travel but still races classic cars competitively.
During the racing season, he would fly off each Friday to a European city to spend the weekend qualifying and then racing. He would be back at work on Monday, ready to field questions about his latest adventures. Something had to give.
‘The travelling wasn’t a problem, but it was the comedown from the adrenaline rush of racing – it was almost like waking up on Monday with a hangover without having drunk any alcohol,’ he tells Obiter. ‘I wanted to progress to partner and, with the additional time commitments of motor sport, I wasn’t comfortable putting the law to one side to go racing.’
