Society calls for single regulator
The Law Society has today called for a single regulator of legal services and statutory protection for the ‘lawyer’ title ahead of a government consultation on reforming the Legal Services Act. In calling for one regulator to replace the current 11, Chancery Lane argues that the SRA has assumed powers that were never envisaged in the Clementi report which gave rise to the act.

Lord Mishcon, who died last month aged 90, has been described as a true gentleman with such a powerful personality that when he walked into a crowded room, a hush would come over the guests. He made his mark at every level, including by becoming the first practising solicitor to become an honorary QC.

Advocacy test failures are up
The prospects for a strong body of High Court solicitor advocates are undermined by the results of the latest advocacy qualification tests. In September 1995, only 29% passed the evidence and procedure test.

The Gazette has been informed that restrictions on English football teams playing in Europe have now been relaxed, which means that teams of English lawyers will be able to participate in the ‘Mundiavocat’ tournament in Split, Yugoslavia.

Ministerial memoirs – the public interest
In replying to a question in the Commons last week, in which proceedings against the publishers of volume 1 of the Crossman Diaries and The Sunday Times were described as ‘ill-advised and wrongly based’, the attorney general maintained that the principle he had sought to establish by those proceedings had been established as a result of the lord chief justice’s judgment.
