A mixed week for the legal team of Her Majesty’s loyal opposition doing their bit for diversity in the legal profession.

In the run-up to the publication of the party’s hard-hitting report on the judiciary, shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan (pictured) found himself having to respond to photographs apparently showing him ‘glancing down’ at a mobile phone while at the wheel of his Volkswagen.

‘It goes without saying that I will co-operate fully with any investigation,’ said Khan, who was this year named ‘road safety parliamentarian of the month’.

Shadow attorney general Emily Thornberry had a less stressful media diary, launching the University of Law’s Articled Apprenticeship scheme at the House of Commons.

She recalled speaking to her secondary modern school careers adviser about what she should do with her life. ‘I remember him telling me, after thinking about it for a bit, perhaps what I could do was visit people in prison.’

She managed the next best thing, being called to the bar in 1983.
