A remarkable number of top lawyers are also closet rock ’n roll stars. Ever since 2009 they have been able to indulge their alter egos while raising money for good causes in the global Law Rocks! battle of the bands. The rules? Each band plays a short set of covers (it’s unfair to inflict original material on colleagues); repeat performers must come up with a new set-list every time. Oh, and Mustang Sally is banned.

Last week five acts trod the stage of Law Rocks! London birthplace, the historic 100 Club in Oxford Street. Barrister Ed Butler opened with a solo acoustic set, followed by The Defendants (Marks & Clerk), Legally Non-Blonde (Reed Smith) the Mishdemeanors (Mishcon de Reya) plus Jones Chase’s Hot Damn!. Highlights? For Obiter it was Marks & Clerk’s Baker Street - with the sax solo delivered on trombone - and Jones’ Chase’s stagecraft. The latter, and a rousing rendition of Common People, won Hot Damn! the evening’s prize.

But the event was really just a warm-up to the main one of the summer: the 15th anniversary extravaganza at The Scala, London. Check out: www.lawrocks.org
