A highlight of the Law Society Yacht Club’s first cruise of the season was the chance to cheer the yacht Maiden as it arrived home after triumphing in the 27,000-mile Ocean Globe. (A circumnavigation by pre-1988 production yachts with 1970s-era navigation equipment. Maiden’s was the first all-woman crew ever to win a round-the-world yacht race.)

The club’s own cruise was rather less ambitious: a sunny weekend sail from Southampton to Weymouth and back via Cowes, in a Sigma 38 chartered at a bargain rate from the University of Southampton. Club commodore and yachtmaster instructor Andrew Hobson skippered a crew of eight with skill levels ranging from professional master mariner to complete novice. The Gazette’s news editor came along as cook.

Next up? The club is entering the classic Round The Island Race on the weekend of 14-16 June. We’re not expecting to win, but...
