One of the country’s largest chains of estate agents announced this week that it planned to slash the number of law firms handling its conveyancing work from more than 1,000 to fewer than 10. Law Society Vice-President Robert Sayer said the move was bad news for high street solicitors and consumers.

Millennium bug lawyers have warned solicitors that the deadline for notices of objection under the US’s Year 2000 Readiness Disclosure Act is 17 April.

Statements appeared in the national and local press in the middle of March, about the possibility of so-called ‘strike action’ by solicitors in support of their claims to increased remuneration. The Council are strongly opposed to concerted ‘strike action’. Even in respect of county court work where the 14-year-old scales of remuneration are quite inadequate, a fact which was recognised even by the Prices and Incomes Board, the Council believe in achieving results through the proper channel, namely the County Court Rule Committee, which is now considering the matter.
