NewsThe Lord Chancellor’s Department minister Geoff Hoon has written privately to his 22 fellow members of the House of Commons standing committee debating the Access to Justice Bill, in an attempt to counter the Law Society’s national advertising campaign on the legal aid reforms. The Society’s campaign, the first of its kind... is a bid to persuade the government to enshrine in statute that legal aid will be available to vulnerable groups.

NewsSharp differences of opinion between the lay and solicitor members of the Solicitors Complaints Bureau’s investigation committee have emerged in its response to key issues in the green paper proposals on the work and organisation of the legal profession. The committee has published a report in which the lay sector strongly favours the notion that the investigation of complaints should be undertaken by a new independent consumer orientated body, quite separate from the Law Society and backed by government funding.

Hijacking of aircraftA sub-committee of the legal committee of the International Civil Aviation Organisation met in Montreal to consider legal measures to prevent unlawful seizure of aircraft (hijacking). The sub-committee agreed unanimously that hijacking should be an offence.
