Barristers in new direct access push

Solicitors must come to terms with more competition from the bar, the chief executive of the Bar Council has told the Gazette, as the body ramps up support for barristers who want to take instructions direct from the public.

Lender duty

Solicitors acting for both buyer and lender in a conveyancing transaction are under a duty to inform the lender of anything which might affect the decision to lend, the Court of Appeal ruled this week. The ruling confirms the decision of Mrs Justice Arden in Mortgage Express v Bowerman and Partners.

Annual general meeting

When questions were invited from the floor, Joshua Rozenberg, a solicitor who is also Radio 4’s legal correspondent, asked what payment had been made to a named former member of staff and why it was not disclosed to the profession. The treasurer said the costs of staff redundancy and severance pay during 1984 were £47,000, of which £30,000 related to the closure of the Society’s catering department.

The Body on the Steps

Those members who not only have a television set which receives BBC2, but also had the time to look at it on 3 June, must have been startled to see on screen the body of a child lying on, of all places, the steps of the Law Society’s Hall. To those who watch television, the sight of a corpse is no novelty; that curious children’s programme Dr. Who abounds with them. But to find the familiar steps which they daily mount on their way to lunch encumbered in this macabre manner must have stretched even their credibility.B
