Claims farmers ‘cash in’ on bombings
The Law Society has urged victims and families affected by last month’s London bombings to only approach reputable firms for legal advice, amid concerns that ‘ambulance-chasing’ claims management companies are attempting to cash in.

Women bar students better males in finals
Women students outperformed their male counterparts for the first time in the bar final exam, it was announced earlier this month by the Council of Legal Education’s Inns of Court School of Law. But there was lingering concern over the comparatively low performance of ethnic minority students.

The president
It may well be true that the City of Manchester relies for its fame upon its century-old association with the cotton trade. It would be wrong, however, to think that its fame rests there, for there are few walks of life in which the sons of this somewhat gaunt city have not gained great distinction. It is, therefore, somewhat surprising that it is 41 years since a Manchester solicitor was president of the Law Society. On 9 July 1965, this omission was repaired when Mr Derek Percy Hilton MBE was elected president.

Mr Theobold Mathew, the Director of Public Prosecutions, said: ‘I cannot believe that this is either adequate or that it makes for the good administration of justice.’
