Letters to the editor

Dear Sir,I am astonished to see how many people, including lawyers (who should know better), spell the plural of money "monies" and not as it should be, "moneys". Why not "donkies", "monkies" and "journies"? The rule is that where a word ends with a "y" which is preceeded (sic) by a vowel, the plural takes an "s", but where a word ending with a "y" is preceeded (sic) by a consonant, the "y" is dropped and "ies" added.

Dear Sir,

A Handy DefinitionI have recently had great difficulty in giving a satisfactory explanation to a little girl of nearly six as to what work is done by a solicitor. Can any member please suggest a handy definition which might satisfy a child?Yours faithfullyBarrington MyersChristchurch
