City giant Freshfields revealed this week that it is advising ITV on the £1.6bn sale of its media and entertainment business to Sky.
‘The sale of ITV M&E to Sky will leave ITV Studios as a distinctive pure-play global content business, enhanced by the addition of Love Productions, home of shows such as Great British Bake Off and The Piano,’ Freshfields trilled in a press release.
The team is being led by Piers Prichard Jones, Kate Cooper and Toby Halford; with support from Martin McElwee and Colin Raftery on antitrust and regulatory, Zofia Aszendorf and Giles Pratt on IP/ IT, data and commercial arrangements, Alice Greenwell on employment, Dawn Heath and Andrew Murphy on pensions and Paul Davison on tax.
However, what Obiter really wanted to know was… what does this deal mean for our favourite soap, Coronation Street? As readers of this section will be aware, Corrie has done wonders for public legal education thanks in large part to Weatherfield’s resident duty solicitor and Ken Barlow’s grandson, Adam (pictured).

Obiter was relieved to see Sky confirm that ITV’s channels and ITVX will remain free-to-air – so viewers can enjoy plenty more legal drama on the cobbles for free.
