Can democracy survive? In these febrile times, who better to answer that question than Jonathan Sumption, often described as the ‘cleverest man in England’.
The bestselling historian and jurisprudential giant will let you know in person if you have a couple of hours to spare next week. On 18 January, Sumption is appearing at Richmond Theatre in south-west London, whence we are promised ‘searing analysis of the challenges democracy faces in Britain today and across the globe’.

You’ll have to be quick, though. As Obiter writes, there are no more than a couple of dozen tickets left outwith ‘the gods’.
As befits a lawyer renowned for eye-watering fees while in practice, his lordship doesn’t come cheap. Tickets top out at £73 plus booking fee – expensive even for the Frank Matcham-designed gem on Richmond Green. The locals can afford it, Obiter reckons.
