Brandon Lewis has only been lord chancellor for six weeks but has already made a lasting impression. His name can be found emblazoned at the top of two huge foundation stones that he unveiled yesterday at a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction on an 18-court complex in London’s Square Mile.

The Salisbury Square Development, funded and delivered by the City Corporation, will house the City of London Law Courts and the City of London Police’s headquarters.

Lewis said the mega court represents a ‘vision of how justice will work in future – with modern, innovative and flexible courts in fit-for-purpose buildings’.

Let’s hope this vision doesn’t include gavels  - a hammer that has never been used by judges in England and Wales - after one was spotted on the podium at yesterday afternoon’s ceremony.

There’s plenty of time to cancel the order – the mega court won’t be ready until 2026.
