Often LiPs can't, rather than won't, pay hundreds of pounds an hour to be represented. They're often very capable and understand the process, but can see that they're being treated unfairly. If a LiP feels that they have been shut out of justice it is probably because they have.

And remember, the primary duty of lawyers is to the court, and with that comes a responsibility to treat LiPs fairly. That may not be what happens in practice, but it is how it is supposed to work.
