There really is no racism against solicitors.

Counsel appear in court more often and so observe, and develop, the skills which are more in demand.

It's far harder to get a place at the independent bar than to become a solicitor, so it also stands to reason that the candidates are likely to be more impressive all round.

Lastly it fits in far better with work at the independent bar. You can just take a week off to sit. You can't do that as easily or at all as a solicitor.
