And picking up on the comments of an anonymous contributor. Some years ago middle ranking barristers were being encouraged to apply for judicial appointments because legal aid was drying up. Without it how could they afford mortgages school fees and golf club subs. The fact that not many had good people skills( buying a round or 4 of drinks at meetings if the circuit mess doesn't count), and that few of them were general practitioners didn't matter as much as having good set connections
