My understanding is legal privilege applies to licensed conveyancers. A public statement like that, which does not have the tone of having consent, would be anathema for a Solicitor (compare to Shoosmith's statement which is slightly different and they must have been confident they could reveal they hadn't acted in this matter, unlike previous public domain matters). Their regulator, the CLC handbook requires [3.6] Clients’ affairs are treated confidentially (except as required or permitted by law or with the Client’s consent
