I think that one of Angela Rayner's mistakes was not instructing a 'full service' firm of solicitors to undertake her conveyancing. It is much more likely, in my view, that (if she gave full instructions) the issue regarding the amount of SDLT payable would have been more likely to have been fully investigated. Just acting for her (as a high profile person) would have meant that a lot of firms would have assessed the client/matter risk as 'high' and a cautious approach would have been taken to the conduct of the work undertaken on her behalf.
