The public misconception around land registration being ' simple cheap and easy ' persuaded politicians to break the solicitors' monopoly on conveyancing, a monopoly which had largely been imposed to protect the public several hundred years ago. Unfortunately the introduction of differential regimes for council taxes and transfer taxes has created complexity including state interference into private residential arrangements previously none of its business. The Law Society should not pass up this opportunity to sing the profession's superior expertise.
