Well, My Lord, that's all very interesting. Personally I set up a company which now does work for its customers akin to a solicitor, but avoiding the reserved activities. I can mostly explain to my company's customers how to do that themselves e g extracting a grant of probate. As you say mortgages are tricky, but the lender can appoint his own and, as you say, often does. Other solicitors are the biggest problem as they get a bit sniffy about my sidestepping the regs, but they are free to do so and if they choose not to that's up to them.

On the question of kudos I no longer say I am a solicitor, I am too ashamed and don't want people throwing tomatoes at me as I walk down the street. Strange isn't it as when I was an articled clerk I couldn't wait to qualify. When SIF offered free run off cover I couldn't wait, well, to run off! And it is also very sad, a once noble and worthy profession reduced to a common or garden trade. Ironic, even!
