"All my colleagues who do cases with litigants in person say it significantly added to the time [the case takes]. The saving you get by not having lawyers has to be counter-balanced by the increase you have to have in court time.’

Quite... solicitors whose role is to take instructions, and may be even advise a client or two, so as to concentrate on the pertinent issues and minimise the use of the limited (and from the sounds of it getting even more limited) courts resources

Take them out of the picture and the courts become the frontline. I am at a loss to understand what 'saving' a Judge finds to balance against by not having the involvement of solicitors although they are warmly welcomed to the world of 'Yes Mr Bloggs.....but how exactly is that relevant?"
As this brave new world is designed to curtail the role that solicitors play, including the unquantifiable where they 'manage' a client, the court will have to do it -increasingly.
