It's not just crime. Those suffering personal injury or property loss who have to contest the account of a lying driver or employer etc have to pay their own legal costs out of their compensation.
A sensible strategy for insurance companies is to threaten a trial and it's associated legal costs for the innnoent injured party to force through settlements far below the injured party's losses.
Where is the honour in being a high street lawyer or a civil court judge when one can't recover enough to compensate simple loss of earnings let alone modest damages for pain and loss of mobility for an innocent person maimed by the negligence of another.
